Congrats you guys! Cute little place, love the gingerbread brackets, and decorative window trim. Maybe the little one can charge the neighbors to look at the world thru a round window :-)

When my parents bought their place the oval window on the second floor was in a large closet (probably originally a small nursery), off of the bedroom I chose. Unbeknownst to me they'd already decided to remove the closet and expand the landing at the top of the stairs.

Congratulations to you too! We did look at a couple country houses with a couple acres. But in the end living close to the college was trumped so Jeff can still bike to work. Plus I have a work share at a CSA just outside of town where we can get all the meat, eggs, poultry and veggies we need grown in a sustainable way.

We can't have a goat or any cloven hooved animals in town, but we can have up to three chickens and I'm looking into how the township feels about bee hives.

The best part of moving into a new house is all the potential!

I know your excitement. I am due with our second on June 6th and we are just now moving into our first house. We have more land then you, but we have plans for it, from farming to hunting. And ours needed a lot more work before we could move in, but it is so awesome. Congrats on the new baby and the new house. Wish u all the luck

I live in TN and I indeed have wild "black caps" in my yard, like a jungle that I started from three small plants found by my pond. They do grow in clusters of berries, just like one of the pictures posted on another site. Another clue, blackberries have angular stems, raspberries (mine anyway) have round stems and have a powdery look that can be wiped of with a finger tip. It is NOT mold or mildew. And, they are awesome to eat!

Another big factor is temperature and weather. If radishes go through a dry spell they will often intensify their flavor. They will be sweetest if their soil is evenly moist. Also the hotter the temperatures the hotter the radish. That's one of the main reasons radishes are an early spring or late fall crop in the Midwest. Yes we could grow them, but we wouldn't want to eat them.

I've only recently started to appreciate radishes; they were too spicy for my young palate and I've held on to the belief for years that I didn't like them. Fortunately I have a strong opinion that you should re-try things you think you don't like from time to time.

I really appreciate your response, and the very helpful links. It's so easy to feel criticized/judged, esp when it comes to food...but I think that having gestational diabetes really is less about "eating healthy" and more about counting and eating exactly the right things. I am not overweight, & I've always eaten healthy, but my insulin response was not suppressed either! So this morning, I'm blaming the hormones from the placenta...not my own lifestyle...and I'm forging ahead. 2 more months to go... xo, kate

I remember I was starving the first week after I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes because I was scared to eat anything! No one told me I was allowed a learning curve and that it was okay if my blood sugar was over every now and then. I was afraid to show the midwives my first set of numbers because I thought they would put me on insulin and tell me I had to have a hospital birth because I had elevated blood sugar several times. However, they were very understanding and gave suggestions as to what I could do to help keep my blood sugar levels in range.

I look back at my meal plan for that first week and it is loaded with salads, frittatas and fish with vegetables. Not a single starch to be found. Don’t be afraid to try starches. I tried carb heavy foods like bread, rice and beans in portions with about 30 grams of carbs to see how my body reacted. I found I pretty much can’t have white rice, wheat bread is okay and beans are good.

A couple good online resources you might find useful include the Spark People Recipe Calculator (http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calculator.asp). You can enter the ingredients in a recipe and the number of servings and it will make a nutrition facts label just like what is printed on processed foods at the grocery store. Many of my recipes on this blog include this information.

I also use My Fitness Pal (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/) both as an ap on my iphone and on the computer to look up the nutritional content of foods. They also have a lot of chain restaurant meal information so if you’re eating out you don’t have to guess. It’s free and it has a ton features for tracking calories and other food nutrients including carbs/protein/fat/fiber. I’m sure I don’t use it to its full potential.
